Zaremba and PIOTR KAMIŃSKI in Warsaw（ワルシャワのザレンバとピオトル・カミンスキー）

ザレンバの店内。広くはありませんが、歴史を感じさせる風格があります。ザレンバは1894年にエドワルド・ザレンバ氏 (1872-1931)がワルシャワ大劇場内に開業した事に始まり、そして、1922年に甥のアドルフ・ザレンバ氏 (1898-1969)が別の場所にアトリエをオープン。アドルフ氏はとても珍しい体型でも完璧にフィットさせるカッティングができ、それは"oko Zaremby（オコ・ザレンブ＝ザレンバの目）"と著名だったそうです。ザレンバ家の伝説では、アドルフ氏は、決闘で頭がいっぱいになっている帝政士官の鎧を隠すためのスーツを作った、と言う話があるとか。
1920年代はワルシャワのクラブ、ギャラリー、劇場が盛況で、自ずとディナージャケット、テイルコートの注文が増え、ザレンバも二人のカッターと15人の職人と、簿記係、配達係のボーイを抱えて、活気があったそうです。その頃に、アドルフ氏の弟である、タデウシュ・ザレンバ氏 (1911-1998)が加入し、その両名で工房は運営されていたそうです。
そして、1933年にダテウシュ氏は独立開業。すぐに有名となり、アトリエは数年後にワルシャワの大通りに移転し、規模も大きくなったとの事。
しかし、1940年にアドルフ氏は逮捕され、パヴィアク刑務所（ワルシャワにあった政治犯の刑務所）に投獄。数ヵ月後に釈放されるものの、アトリエはゲシュタポによって略奪され、大戦の終わりにはアトリエ内全てが焼失。
タデウシュ氏のアトリエも、1944年のワルシャワ蜂起の際、完全に破壊されたとの事。
1945年7月、タデウシュ氏は別の場所で営業を再開。従業員にとって、「ザレンバで働いていた」と言う経験は自慢になり、仕立て屋志望者にとって、それは成功するためのキャッチフレーズだったそうです。ザレンバのスーツとは、それほどの高級ブランドと言う位置付けだったとの事。
そして、1956年に現在の場所に移転。しかし、ポーランドは第二次世界大戦後は共産主義となったため、ザレンバのような高級テイラーは政府に好まれなかったそうです。良質の素材は贅沢品として入手しづらく、闇市場や密輸で入手。そして、少なくとも月に一度は、秘密警察が店舗を訪れていたそうです。そして、禁じられていた英国ウールを隠す、特別な隠し場所がアトリエ内にあったとか。なお、この当時の顧客には、ポーランドの有名詩人、ズビグニェフ・ヘルベルト氏やヨゼフ・ツィランキェヴィチ元ポーランド首相が名を連ねていたとの事。
さて、タデウシュ氏の息子であるアダム・ザレンバ氏（1940-2005）は、1966年にワルシャワ工科大学を卒業後にエンジニアをしていたが、70年代に共同経営者となるべく入社。そして、良いテイラー兼カッターとなったそうです。
70年代後半には、アダム氏はポーランドと英国の共同制作テレビシリーズ、「シャーロック・ホームズ」の衣装を担当し、見事な仕事をしてみせたそうです。しかし、間もなくポーランドには戒厳令が発せられ、誰もエレガンスについて興味がなくなり、多くのテイラーや職人さんは廃業。89年の民主化以降、海外製品が流入してきたのも痛かったようです。
1998年にタデウシュ氏が死去後は、アダム氏と奥様のグラジュナさん夫婦でお店を運営。2005年にアダム氏は急逝し、以降はグラジュナさんと息子のマチエイ氏で運営。08年からマチエイ氏が単独で代表を務めています。

以上は、マチエイさんから頂いた、お店の歴史についての英文と、ザレンバのウェブサイト内にある、ポーランド語で書かれたお店の歴史を日本語訳して書いてみました。重要でないと思った記述については省略しています。もし僕の翻訳に間違いがございましたら、是非ご指摘下さい。

なお、マチエイ氏は、"直系"と言う観点では3代目になりますが、創業からの歴史を見ると5代目になりますね。

Our history starts in 1894 when Edward Zaremba (1872-1931) opened his atelier in the building of the Grand Theatre – a prime location gathering the noble of the era, surrounded by modern buildings, banks, chic shops and the finest hotels. Extraordinary skills of the tailor became famous not only in Warsaw, but in the entire Europe. He was often described by the papers in Paris, London, Vienna and Moscow and was frequently invited to open shops abroad. He decided to stay in Warsaw and establish a family company that would be later run by his sons and relatives.

One of them was Adolf Zaremba (1898-1969) who inherited the uncle’s talent and the famous ‘Zaremba eye’ – Adolf could perfectly match the style with the most unusual figures. A family legend has it that he tailored a suit for a duel-obsessed Tsarist officer to hide his armour.
Adolf Zaremba started working at the Grand Theatre building, but in 1922 he opened an atelier at ul. Hoża 6 and in 1927 moved to ul. Wspólna 36.

1920s was a great time for tailors with the capital city booming and new clubs, galleries and theatres popping up.
Parties at embassies and official premieres were the everyday life of the Warsaw’s finest. Orders for dinner jackets and coat tails were going in their hundreds; plus fours and breeches were very popular as men tended to practice aristocratic sports. At that time the atelier hired 15 journeymen, 2cutters, a bookkeeper and a delivery boy. Adolf's younger brother, Tadeusz Zaremba(1911-1998), was introduced to the family business at that time and the atelier operated under the name Bracia Zaremba.

In 1933, Tadeusz decided to open his own atelier at ul. Koszykowa 52. Master Tadeusz was a true VIP in Warsaw in between the world wars – his tailoring skills came together with a reputation for being a man of great class and charisma. He quickly exceeded the fame of his brother and became the number 1 choice for actors and almost all the diplomats, professors, artists and businessmen. He often commented on trends in men’s fashion. After several years the small atelier moved from ul.Koszykowa 52 to larger premises at ul. Koszykowa 40 at the corner of Marszałkowska.

Adolf’s and Tadeusz’s businesses
developed until the World War 2. In 1940, Adolf Zaremba was arrested and transported to the Pawiak prison. Thanks to the several-month long efforts of the entire family he was finally released from the prison just to find the atelier ransacked by the Gestapo. At the end of the war, fire destroyed the entire atelier and everything inside it.

War did not spare Tadeusz – like his brother he witnessed regular searches and confiscations. Eventually, the atelier at the corner of Marszałkowska and Koszykowa was completely destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. However, in July 1945 Tadeusz resumed his business, this time in Al. Jerozolimskie 17.

After the war, Tadeusz Zaremba kept developing the business and provided tailoring services for the Warsaw’s crème
de la crème and diplomats. The master rarely mentioned names of his famous clients; he preferred to talk about the would-be ones like Jan Kiepura who was declined when he had wished a bespoke suit ready ‘for the next day’. Former employees were the first to boast with their experience in the Zaremba atelier.
‘Former cutter with the Zaremba’ or ‘previously with the Zaremba’ were among the most successful catchphrases for wannabe tailors. The brand stands for quality tailoring and a suit by Zaremba is one of the greatest luxuries.

In 1956 the company’s premises were to be demolished, so Tadeusz Zaremba moved the studio to ul. Nowogrodzka 15, i.e. the current location. While the master was trying to live his usual life, the new government did not like the bourgeois elegance. Materials were rationed, a good fabric was purchased on the black market or smuggled from abroad. Although Tadeusz Zaremba frequently appeared in the TV, his company was at least once a month visited by the Secret Police.
Influential customers (like cabaret stars, Zbigniew Herbert, the National Philharmonic musicians, major movie stars and PM Józef Cyrankiewicz) were unable to help. There are still special hiding places in the atelier where the prohibited English wool was kept. Bespoke tailoring gradually became very rare.

Adam Zaremba (1940-2005) took over the family tradition, which was a bit surprising at the very beginning. In 1966, Adam graduated from the Warsaw University of Technology and started working as an engineer. However, he was also a skilful tailor and cutter.
He joined his father in 1970s to become a co-owner in 1976. In the late 1970s he accepted an unusual order to prepare costumes for a famous Polish-British television series about Sherlock Holmes. He did the job brilliantly. Yet, soon afterwards was the martial law – no one thought about elegance, many tailors and other artisans went bankrupt. Even more joined them after 1989 following the inflow of foreign labels. Tadeusz Zaremba died in 1998 and was buried in the Alley of the Notable at the Warsaw Powązki Cemetery. The company was run by Adam Zaremba and his wife Grażyna.

Adam Zaremba died suddenly in 2005 and the business was led by his wife Grażyna and their son Maciej Zaremba (b.1981). Maciej is the only owner since 2008.



ザレンバのサンプルスーツの一つ。イタリアのように柔らかいライン、ナチュラルショルダーがハウススタイルとの事。ボタンもイタリア製を使用。アンコンジャケットも作るそうです。













ザレンバネームのアルバート・サウストンのブレイシーズもあります。靴ではチーニーを取り扱っていました。




ザレンバがこれまで取得してきたディプロマ。



入口のドアには、マチエイさんのお母様が80年代に入手したと言う、日本の風鈴がかかっておりました。そして、マチエイさんは車を二台所有しており、三菱とスバルと、ともに日本車です（笑）。



店舗から近い場所にある、ザレンバの自社工房です。ジャケット担当が4名で、トラウザース担当が2名。一番手前のストライプのシャツを着ている男性がマスターテイラーで、縫製はもちろん、パターン作成も担当しております。




職人さんが手縫いしているのがご覧頂けるとおり、ザレンバは手縫い箇所が多いです。



手縫いはシルク糸を使用し、ボタン付けとミシン縫いは丈夫さを重視してコットン糸を使用。日本のテイラーさんの場合、ミシン縫いもシルク糸で、ボタン付はより丈夫な麻糸を使用する事が多いですね。




当然、芯地も自作です。




作成途中のジャケット脇。良いシェイプが出ていますね。



襟付け、袖付け、肩入れなど、主要箇所はもちろん手縫いです。上画像は、イタリアらしさを意識して雨降り袖で仕上げておりますね。




さらに、ダーツまで手縫いです。ここも手縫いしているテイラーさんは少ないですね。




ライニングの接合も手縫い。




腰帯の縫い付けも手縫いです。画像に映ってはおりませんが、股の部分も手縫いです。



トラウザースの直線縫いまで手縫いしておりました。大分手がかかっていて驚きです。

最後に、前述した、4代目のアダム氏が衣装を担当したテレビシリーズ、「シャーロック・ホームズ」の画像をマチエイさんより頂きましたので、掲載致します。とてもエレガントかつクラシックな、美しい衣装です。

仮縫い2回。８週間で完成。スーツは自社工房製。シャツはポーランドの別工房にて製作で、生地はイタリア製。英語不可。



ピオトル・カミンスキーさんのお店は、2階建商店街の2階にあります。



代表であり、マスターテイラーのPiotr Kamiński（ピオトル・カミンスキー）さん。ザレンバの４代目、アダム・ザレンバ氏に師事して８年の修行後に独立されました。



英語が通じないので、あまりお話はできませんでしたが、ピオトルさんのスーツもご覧のとおり、肩入れ、袖付けをはじめ、手縫い箇所が多いです。ウェブサイトによると、別料金でミシンを一切使わない、完全手縫いのスーツも受け付けているようです。

ピオトルさんのスーツは二つしか見ておりませんが、その二つとも、フロントダーツが胸ポケットギリギリ、かなり高い位置まで入っているのが目に付きました。ただ、この高いダーツは例外のようで、たまたま注文客がそう言った体型だったから、との事でした。
